Music Career

Khaid began doing music at the age of 13. He was doing freestyles on the streets and was encouraged by his friends to take it to the next level. Without enough funds to further his education, Khaid was urged by his father to learn a handiwork and he eventually began a mechanic apprenticeship. It was from the Mechanic job that Khaid got to support his family and his music. At the time, posting music covers was a thing for many up-and-coming artistes. Khaid decided to join this trend and began posting his music freestyle videos on his Instagram page. It was one of such videos that caught the attention of Sydney Talker, a popular Nigerian skit maker who reached out to Khaid via private message. Interestingly, Sydney had just launched a record label named Neville Records and Khaid became the label’s first signee in January 2022.

It kept bugging me so I decided to check the message and the first thing I saw was the verified tick and like 1 million followers. I was so surprised! I was actually going to thank him for following me and I saw where he DM’d me saying he liked my sound. I ended up going to his house and we vibed to some instrumentals that day. He would go on to release his first single “With You” on 28 January 2022. With You became an instant hit, peaking at number 48 on the Nigeria TurnTable chart, with the music video garnering over 5 million views on YouTube.

His next single “SKI” was released in April and an extended play soon followed on On 27 May 2022. The EP titled DIVERSITY comprised 6 tracks. Since then, Khaid has been making waves with hit singles like Jolie, Carry Me Go, and Annabella. His music is popular among youths and his songs are often used in short videos on Tiktok.

Khaid started off as a freestyler at an early age. Growing up, Khaid was influenced by his parents’ different playlists. His mom often played Michael Jackson songs while his dad preferred local music with Fela being his favorite. Khaid says he was heavily influenced by trap music which gave rise to his genre of music, described as afro-trap. He loved listening to Juice WRLD, Polo G, NBA Youngboy, XXXtentacion. According to Khaid, the kind of music he makes depends on his mood at the time. “If I’m in a happy mood I’ll write an afrobeat song, if I’m in a sad mood I write over trap production,” he told Shahzaib Hussain in a 2022 interview.
